Over the years, a number of cars were produced that failed to meet expectation. Many different factors could be blamed for this however whether it’s the cars performance or its appearance, it doesn’t matter.
Even the biggest names in the industry can occasionally drop the ball and Rolls-Royce is a good example.
In 1975 the Rolls-Royce Camargue was introduced and it didn’t go down as well as the brand has hoped. The vehicle found itself on many “worst cars” lists throughout the years, which didn’t help at all. Between 1975 and 1986, 531 units were produced before the car was discontinued.
So what exactly is about the vehicle that made resulted in such harsh criticism? Let’s start at the very beginning to find out.
First of all, let’s look at the car’s price. Upon release, the vehicle cost approximately $147,000 which is roughly $588,000 in today’s money. The Camargue was the most expensive production car in the world at the time, which perhaps explains why only 531 were made during the 11 years it was in production.
When it comes to performance, the Camargue was no different to the other models Rolls-Royce had on the market. It added very little to the impressive range that the brand offered, which is another reason why the vehicle was quite disappointing.
The car’s styling is the main reason why it didn’t do as well as expected. The luxury that the brand is renowned for was nowhere to be seen and the overall design simply lacked any excitement.
One area in which the vehicle actually redeemed itself was its interior. Rolls-Royce is known for the level of luxury that it offers to its customers so it’s something that we all were probably expecting.
The fact that the vehicle didn’t introduce anything new is probably the most disappointing. With a price tag so steep, you’d expect a little more from the vehicle.
So, is the Camargue the worst Rolls-Royce ever produced? Perhaps, however there’s no denying that the vehicle offered a level of luxury unlike any other, just like any other model manufactured by the brand. It failed to impress, however it experienced moderate success and sold quite a lot of units considering its price. Fortunately, Rolls-Royce managed to redeem itself and today it still remains one of the most exclusive and luxurious brand on the market.
As mentioned before, even the biggest and most popular manufacturers can occasionally drop the ball however producing one car that’s unimpressive doesn’t really mean anything. It’s just something that happens from time to time.
