When it comes to sports cars manufactured in the UK, Swallow Doretti is definitely worth mentioning. This unique vehicle was only in production for one year, which makes it extremely rare to find today. A favourite among classic car enthusiasts, the Swallow Doretti was first introduced in 1954.1955_Doretti_Swallow.JPG The Swallow Coachbuilding Company (1935) Ltd. was behind the vehicle. Known for its 2-seaters the company produced numerous vehicles, mainly during the 1930’s and early 1940’s. Swallow Doretti was named after Dorothy Deen who managed the Western US distributorship Cal Sales. Because the Doretti included a tubular Reynolds 531 manganese-molybdenum, medium-carbon steel chassis and was fitted with overdrive it was capable of reaching speeds of 100mph. Frank Rainbow, the in-house designer for the Swallow Coachbuilding Company, was in charge of Doretti’s design. Although the vehicle didn’t have any unique features and was rather standard style-wise, it still had a certain quality to it that many people fell in love with. Unfortunately due to the Tube Investment Group changing its policy, in 1955, only one year after it was introduced, Swallow Doretti had to be retired. It is believed that pressure from the British motor industry had a lot to do with the Doretti’s early demise. Back when the vehicle first went on sale it cost £1,102. Since the production stopped after a year, the vehicle is rather hard to find today and due to it being such a unique vehicle its value has increased. Whether you like the Swallow Doretti or not, you can’t deny that it’s a truly unique vehicle. We will never know what could’ve become of the company have they kept going however because of its uniqueness and rarity the vehicle will always have a special place in history. What do you think?
